KEY STAGE 2 IMMERSION COURSE IN MANDARIN

Plymouth was successful in securing places for KS2 pupils at a Chinese Immersion course held by the British Council in July. 10 children from Year 5 at Elburton and Drake Primary schools took part in the course which was held at Frensham Hall in Farnham, Surrey.

The children spent the mornings learning Mandarin and the afternoons on cultural activities including Puppet making, Chinese calligraphy, Tai Chi, Lion dance, Shaolin boxing, mask making etc. On the final day they put on a performance iluustrating all they had experienced for their parents and guests.

Following the course the schools applied for further funding to support Mandarin teaching for their pupils and were successful in obtaining a grant.

COMENIUS REGIO

Plymouth LA was successful in its applications for Comenius Regio projects with Brest in France and Galicia in Spain.  The Brest project involves the Councils, Schools, Twinning Associations and aquariums in both Cities. The theme of the project is 'Citizenship and Entrepreneurial Education' and it is hoped it will raise the aspirations of the children involved.  A group from Brest visited Plymouth in September and a return visit took place in November.  It is proving to be an excellent project with great enthusiasm on both sides.

The project with Galicia involves 2 schools, Universities in both Cities and the Councils. The theme is 'Towards the development of deeper learning and transferable lifelong skills through the use of European Key Competencies'.

CHINESE SUMMER CAMPS

The Chinese summer camps held during July to improve the teachers' and students' English were a great success and it is hoped that they will take place again in 2012.  26 teachers from schools in the Jiaxing area visited Plymouth for 3 weeks and attended a course supported by Marjons and the City Council.  They also visited schools to observe lessons and learn more about the English Education system.  The students course was run by Mayflower College and the City Council and helped the 16 students involved to improve their English and learn more about our culture.

They all took part in cultural activities during their stay and met with the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress.  They also visited London, Bath and Windsor as well as The Hoe, Barbican, Dartmoor, Mount Edgcumbe and the Eden Project.
