LOCATION
If you open a world map, you'll clearly see that Jiaxing is located in the southeastern part of China's coastline and in the center of Yangtze River Delta. It abuts on Shanghai to the east, Suzhou to the north, Hangzhou to the west and Hangzhou Bay to the south. It covers a land area of 3,915 sq km and has a population of 3.339 million. Under the jurisdiction of Jiaxing City there are two districts (Nanhu District and Xiuzhou District), three county-level cities (Pinghu City, Haining City and Tongxiang City) and two counties (Jiashan County and Haiyan County).
Jiaxing is a neighboring city of Shanghai municipality on the eastern coast of China. Bordering Shanghai and Jiangsu Province, it is in the northern part of Zhejiang province. The city is 90km away from Shanghai to its northeast, 90km away from Hangzhou, the capital city of Zhejiang province, to its southwest, 70km away from Suzhou to its north and 40km away from the Jiaxing port to its southeast. It is located in the center of the China’s east coastal economic belt and the dynamic Yangtze River Delta.
Jiaxing Economic and Technological Development Zone (JXEDZ) lies to the northwest of the downtown, an extension of the city specialized in industrial function.
ADMINISTRATION
The prefecture-level city of Jiaxing administers 7 county-level divisions, including 2 districts, 3 county-level cities and 2 counties.
These are further divided into 75 township-level divisions, including 60 towns, 2 townships and 13 subdistricts.
HISTORY
• 210 BC: Qin Shi Huang changed the name of Jiaxing from Changshui District to Youquan
• 231: Master Yedao of Jiaxing informed Sun Quan of the Kingdom of Wu that there was a sign of auspice, so
Sun changed Youchuan to Hexing District . This why Jiaxing's abbreviation is He. Sun also changed his era
name to Jiahe in the following year.
• January 242: Sun He was made the crown prince. To prevent the name taboo, Jiahe was changed to Jiaxing.
• 938: (Later Jin of the Five Dynasties): Xiu Prefecture established
• 1117: (Song Dynasty): Lianghe District
• 1429: (Ming Dynasty): Xiushui District was established northwest of Jiaxing.
• Early 1900s (the Republic of China): Xiushui and Jiaxing were combined into Jiahe County
• 1914: Reverted to Jiaxing County (because there's a Jiahe in Hunan Province)
• 1921: Communist Party of China founded at the South Lake in Jiaxing.
• 1949 - 1958, 1979 (PRC): Upgraded to a city
• 1981: Old Jiaxing County merged into the city
• 1983: Upgraded to prefecture-level city
ECONOMY
Jiaxing has always been a rich and prosperous land and is long known as "land of fish and rice" and "place of silk and satin". Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, especially since the implementation of the policy of reform and opening up to the outside world, jointly influenced by the development of Pudong District of Shanghai, the opening-up economy of southern Jiangsu Province as well as the privately operated economy of southern Zhejiang Province, Jiaxing has made a rapid progress in economy and its comprehensive strength has been enhanced remarkably. At present, all the counties and county-level cities under Jiaxing's jurisdiction are listed among the top 30 of the 100 wealthy counties in China and among well-off counties in Zhejiang Province.
Jiaxing is one of the fastest growing cities in China. In 2008, the city’s total GDP reached RMB 181.53 billion, a year on year increase of 10.7%. The per capita GDP reached USD 7,746. Among them, the added value of the primary industry amounted to RMB 10.522 billion, an increase of 2.3%; the added value of the secondary industry stood at RMB 10.8529 billion, an increase of 10.5%; while that of tertiary industry registered at RMB 62.449 billion, an increase of 12.5%.
TOURISM
Because Jiaxing is abundant in tourist resources and its environment is exquisite, it has become one of China's outstanding tourist cities and the national botanical garden cities. As a famous natural resort in southern China, Jiaxing combines the beauty of tides, lakes, rivers and the sea. There are a bunch of scenic spots in Jiaxing that form the characteristics of a watery town in southern China, including South Lake (the revolutionary sacred place), Qianjiang Tides (known as NO. 1 Tides in the world), Xitang in Jiashan and Wuzhen in Tongxiang (featured in the ancient styles of southern China) as well as the North-South Lake in Haiyan and Jiu-Long-Shan in Pinghu. At present, Jiaxing has 4 national AAAA level scenic spots, 1 national AAA level spot and 6 national-level key units of preservation of cultural relics.
GEOGRAPHY
Jiaxing is situated at longitude 120o18’-121o18’E and latitude 30o15’-31oN. It falls into the sub-tropical zone and enjoys four distinct seasons, mild temperature, fertile land, sufficient sunshine and rainfall. The annual average temperature: 15.7℃, non-frost period: 230 days, annual sunshine: over 2000 hours, annual rainfall: 1,199mm. The landform of Jiaxing is mostly flat land, occupying 88.1% of the total area. The rest comprises of water surface 10.7% and hills 1.2%. The average elevation is 3.7 m. Jiaxing has 121 km of coastline and over 40 km is suitable for construction of seaports.

TRANSPORTATION
Jiaxing City presents a sound environment for investors and it is a wonderland for entrepreneurs. Its transportation is convenient with railroads, highways and watercourses extending in all directions. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal runs through the city and there is an immediate access to the Shanghai-Hangzhou Double-Track Railway, 320 National Highway, Shanghai-Hangzhou Expressway, Zha-Jia-Su Expressway. The rate of high class and sub-high class road-paving ranks the first in Zhejiang Province. As a result, a traffic circle of half an hour is finalized from Jiaxing to the counties and county-level cities under its jurisdiction and a one-hour traffic circle finalized from Jiaxing to Shanghai, Hangzhou and Suzhou.
EDUCATION
There are 738 schools of different levels (including kindergartens) in Jiaxing Prefecture. There are 662,600 students studying in these schools. Among them there are 8 tertiary colleges, 37 secondary vocational schools, 295 kindergartens, 393 primary and middle schools. 40,640 staff are working at these schools, among them 34,724 are professional teachers. During the past several years, the developing objects for the schools are equipoise, high quality and characteristic, thus great achievement has been made in both instructing and teaching in the schools.

The main hypocenters, distance and degree: The main hypocenters in this region which are more than 600 km away from Jiaxing lie in the East China sea and Yellow sea with the most intense earthquake of magnitude 5 on Richter scale.
The likelihood of earthquake: Jiaxing is not suited in the quake-prone geological belt. The recorded earthquakes in its 7000 years-long history were less than magnitude 2.3 on Richter scale
