DVD: Stuart Road Primary School - Whole School Change Programme
Between January 2007 and February 2008 Stuart Road Primary School in partnerships with Creative Partnerships and Devon and Cornwall Chinese Association, embarked on a creative school change programme based around modern foreign languages.
With a strong ethos of creativity and internationalism the school was looking for a 'next step' in their development. What skills might children need in ten years time? How could creativity promote language learning? Considering the vibrancy of Plymouth's Chinese community, how could this become more of a resource for children?
With these questions in mind, the school decided to develop a change programme with modern foreign languages, Mandarin and Chinese culture at its core. This film is the story of that journey.
Following the success of the work at Stuart Road, the approach used and Mandarin as a language has been being rolled out in Plymouth in partnership with Plymouth's Children's Services. As a result of this partnership, the following schools now employ Mandarin teaching as part of their school curriculum:
Additionally, Old Priory and College Road are also offering Mandarin teaching within their curricula.

At DHSG Mandarin Chinese in now part of the curriculum.
Chinese will be included in the group of languages offered in an option of one lesson of a language per week (also including French, German, Italian and Spanish) to Year 12 students. Qualification will probably be through CBLC or Asset Languages. In the first trawl about 90 students seem to have taken up this option, with about 34 choosing Chinese.
A group of Year 11 pupils who do and ICT GCSE will be offered two lessons per week in Chinese, again possibly leading to the Asset Languages qualification.
Pupils in Years 7 -8 and then Years 9 - 10 will be offered extracurricular lessons, either at lunchtime or in twilight sessions, in Mandarin. Other twilight sessions will also offer Mandarin Chinese lessons to staff and parents.
Through our partner primary schools we would also offer some Mandarin Chinese courses of about 6 weeks at a time, as part of their extended language learning. At DHSG we run Language Awareness Days for Year 7, 8 and 9 at three different times of the year, and Mandarin Chinese would be offered in these. We have also established a Language Day for Year 7 when DHSG and DHSB collaborate and pupils join together to try out different languages - again Mandarin Chinese would be part of this.
We would also look at support classes in Mandarin Chinese for those pupils of Chinese origin who might wish to study for the Edexcel GCSE qualification.
