Ghana

The Link between Plymouth and Sekondi-Takoradi in Ghana was established in 2003, and endorsed by Plymouth City Council and Shama-Ahanta East Metropolitan Assembly (SAEMA), the local authority in Ghana, and we are celebrating our 10th Anniversary this year.

 

The Ghana Link is comprised of:

  • Links between thirteen primary schools, two special schools and nine secondary schools, including teacher visits and field trips, both to Ghana and Plymouth, by teachers and students.
  • Theatre performances by young people, in Ghana and in the Theatre Royal, Plymouth, to present A Midsummer Night's Dream and a Ghanaian play- The Marriage of Anansewa (2005 and 2006)
  • Partnership with Plymouth Argyle Football Club, who trained staff from Sekondi in pitch maintenance and stadium management in preparation for Sekondi's new stadium, built for the 2008 African Cup of Nations.
  • Operation Hernia: visits by medical staff, including a Ghanaian specialist resident in the UK, to perform over 1,000 hernia operations under the auspices of the European Hernia Society President: Professor Andrew Kingsnorth of Derriford Hospital, Plymouth: 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.

  • Hosting the Olympic athletes for their pre-camp training from Ghana in July 2012
