Could this bring real benefits and positive change to your community, the UK and yourself?

  • All applicants must be British citizens (British Nationality Act 1981), and residenTin the UK
  • Anyone aged 18 and above at interview, and in any occupation can apply
  • No qualifications are required as every application is judged on the indivdual themselves and the merit of the project
  • Applications are only considered for individual projects although expedition leaders may also apply under the Adventure, Exploration and Leaders of Expeditions category
  • Applicants must demonstrate that their project will bring real benefit to others in their community and in so doing to the UK
  • Fellowship grants for 'gap year' activities, courses, academic studies or student grants will not be considered. This includes electives, degree placements, internships and post-graduate studies, unless real and wider benefits to others in the UK can be demonstrates

The Kirk Fund

Each year up to twelve Peter Kirk travel scholarships are awarded to promote understanding of Europe amongst young Britons, and of Britain amongst young people from other European countries. They enable young people aged between 18 and 26 to carry out a study project of their own choice in another European country.

  • Are you aged between 18 and 26?
  • Would you like £1500 to spend between 6 weeks and three months in Europe?
  • Would you like to find out more about other European countries and the people who live there?
  • Could you write a report on what you discovered?

Applying for the Fund

  • It is essential that you are prepared to travel abroad independently. Although you are not required to be a specialist in modern languages you will need to gather information on your project from conversations with people as well as from books and other media. You should, therefore, be confident that you will be able to talk to the people you meet in the country(ies) you visit.
  • When drawing up the list of candidates to be interviewed, and when deciding who should be awarded scholarships the selectors consider academic qualifications to be less important than enthusiasm and the ability to carry through an independent project in a foreign country.
  • Applicants are required to have been in full-time education at some time during the 12 months preceding their application and should be aged between 18 and 26 at the time they travel (under some circumstances an older candidate up to age 29 might be considered).

Deadline for this year: Monday, 9th November 2009
